postc ART

For the postcART Project, kooii invites visual artists to produce postcard size artworks on one or more of the 3 selected themes. (see below in text) .The artists are free to decide on the materials and styles. Works can be either on paper, plastic, cardboard, fabric, canvas or wood, leather, printed paper, photographs. It can be with ink, acrylic, oil, pencil, charcoal, embroidery, spray paint, airbrush, clay, digital art, needlework, print, collage, clay, nail polish, digital montage etc. the choice of material is unlimited. The only requirement is that the outer line of each work measures exactly 4’’ X  6’’ which is standard post card size.

 

Background:

In recent years, the Internet has created the fundamental, globally accepted platform for sending quick messages such as email and "instant messages", overtaking printed mail traffic worldwide.

But the postcard remains an object of desire. Postcard collecting still ranks number 3 in the US right after coins and stamps.  Postcards have a universal appeal. The fact that almost all imaginable subjects and topics at some point in history have been portrayed on a postcard, adds to the popularity. Through the ages, postcards have had different functions, each of those related to cheap, fast but attractive communication. The postcard has its limits  as well. Would you tell someone your mother had died, just by sending a postcard?

 

Project:

Create an artwork the size of a postcard. This work of art is an instant art message from you, an individual artist, to your fellow human beings in this world. You, the artist are the messenger and your message must be about any of these 3 themes:

 

· YOU, the artist, your particularities. (this can be a self portrait or any kind of self image, mind map, personal philosophy , dream or vision or image of your immediate very personal world)

 

· UNIFORMS: a uniform can be many things, a uniform can be humanizing (a surgeon, a nurse,) as well as dehumanizing (a prisoner, a soldier) it can be a fashion statement (skin head, biker, punker, Madonna, tattoos), a display of power (generals, dictators) or functional (factory workers, mechanics, waiters, doormen) Try to be provocative by juxtaposing contradictory messages and evoking conflicting emotions: is it reassuring or troubling? Is it order or disorder? Disobedient, obedient? Stigmatized or desexualized?

 

· ROMANTIC LOVE & NATURE in times of rapid transformations. Write your love story in contemporary creative language.

 

 

Please note: Only Size Matters: This is YOUR artwork. You can use any material style or technique as long as the size is respected. You can submit as many works as you like.

Make sure you sign your name on the back of the work.

All entries will be reviewed by kOOii. Those selected will be put up for display at various venues in Sri Lanka and abroad. In case of sales Kooii will charge 50 percent commission to cover operating cost. If revenue surpasses cost, the funds will go to the kOOii Artist Development Fund.
